Give a Dog a Bone
In 2013, I founded the ‘Give a Dog a Bone… and an animal a home’ charity to tackle two issues close to my heart: loneliness amongst older adults and the rising number of animals in rescue centres.
The charity was originally set up to offer financial support to those over 60+ to adopt a rescue pet companion. It is a WIN/WIN – the person gets a friend, and the animal gets a home. We also offer a monthly contribution towards the ongoing costs of caring for the pet, for those who might otherwise struggle.
In 2018, we launched a new project – Companionship in the Community. A safe space for older adults to meet others and spend time with our very special team of Companionship Dogs. This project recognises that, whilst an older adult may love animals – sometimes they can’t have/don’t want one…
We now have four community spaces: Shawlands, Troon, Alloa and Dunfermline. Open 5 days per week, we offer a free daily tea and chat service for the whole community, plus extra (free) activities for those aged 60+.
Our centres have become vibrant communities where people can find friendship, support and plenty of opportunities for a little ‘doggy’ therapy.
For me, the greatest reward is seeing the positive impact our work has, every day. The people we support continue to inspire me, particularly those in their 80s who remain active, enthusiastic and determined to contribute to their communities. Their energy reminds me that age should never be a barrier to making a difference, and I hope to carry that same spirit throughout my own journey in charity and beyond.
